Further to looking at the brochures about the 790 series...boy they sure don't give you much info.......I have been reading some posts about the differeent tire availabilty for a new JD 790....What is the standard tire that comes with the machine from the factory.?? the bar tread ag tire.???I would be using the machine for lawn mowing...tilling and snow blowing.!!!What would be best tire to purchase with machine...and are they a lot more money???Does anyone use chains on the rears when working in the snow???Glen

I can't help much with tire specifics, except to note that you may not be happy with ag tires for lawn mowing. I have turfs myself, but some people have good luck with industrials. An owners manual probably gives standard tire sets for ag and maybe other tire types as well. I don't know about all tractors, but ag and turf tires for my Ford 1710 take different wheels. So, if you're ordering a tractor new, it's a good idea to be fairly certain what tires you want. It's probably not just a matter of changing the tires if you don't like them.
I haven't needed chains with my turf tires for blowing snow on frozen gravel. Sometimes I could use more traction when pushing snow around with the loader, but the problem is manageable, and I can always add more ballast to gain traction. I believe that chains on the back work, if needed, but sometimes steering is a problem. Chains on the front help with traction for both pulling and steering. Some people use chains on the front only, but many people think that is hard on 4wd trains.
Lack of clearance is a problem sometimes encountered when fitting chains on tires. Turf tires, being the widest of tire types, have the most problems with clearance. If you're thinking about chains, especially on turf tires, it's probably a good idea to ask a dealer what chains will work with a particular tire.

Glen I A few weeks ago I purchased a new JD 990 mfwd with R-4 tires on it.I also had these tires loaded.So far after 20 hours the R-4 tires have been working very well.Hope this will help. BILL ....

Glenn, I have turfs on my similar sized compact. (and ags on the other) I use chains in the winter...sometimes just the fronts, and sometimes rear as well. Turfs will work on frozen ground, but not on glare ice or in deep snow. Sometimes I leave them on in the Summer if I am going to be working on granite or somewhere that is hard on my soft turf tires.
I don't know about any problems with fit-up on chains. I made my own by modifying a set of car chains. If you take a weekend of plier, hacksaw, and vise work you can turn out a really nice job.
Turfs give a softer ride than ag tires and are a wee bit more stable on side-hill travel. Both of these are major advantages in my mind. Ags are much better in loose dirt or mud, but in most other surfaces the turfs will hold their own.

I have a JD 790 with factory R4 industrial tires. They work well for lawn work around my house. I think the ag. tires would tear up your yard. I think the R4 tires (4 wheels) cost about $250. extra. John. ....

glenn, i'm in a similar situation. got a quote for a 790 and wanted to get the "smaller" ag tires so i could get chains on them without taking the fenders off. when i went to order, the dealer told me that JD no longer offers the tractor with the "smaller" ag tires (evidently not enough people were ordering them). anyone know if this is the case? we live in the hills of western maryland and i have trouble getting my old IH up (and down) the lane plowing snow without chains. dealer said i could run chains on just the front with no damage to the driveline. would appreciate any knowledge about this as i know about nothing about these 4wd compacts. if anyone is running a 790 with a front mount 59 inch JD blower would appreciate any comments. ....

I purchased a 790 4x4 with ag tires loaded. A loader and a 5ft. Befco finishing mower. I opted to by a set of turfs on rims loaded for front and rear. (reqired all 4 because it is 4x4) The cost was $1200 dollars extra. Sounds like you could get by with turfs but if you load them and are in the rough where a flat tire could be a problem. One flat repair and refill with calcium would pay for a set of weights for the wheels. If you get a 2wheel drive then consider a industrial on rear and a turf on the front. How nice do you want your ground to look after you mow? What work will you do the most of? Good Luck, John ....
